Coffee brewing using the Moka Pot is one of the easiest methods of brewing cafe style coffee at home. In principle, a Moka Pot is an extremely economical alternative of an espresso machine.
How does Moka Pot work?
A Moka Pot has three chambers.
- The lower most chamber is where water is poured for brewing purpose. It also has a nozzle to release excess steam pressure.
- The middle chamber is where ground coffee is placed through which pressurised water passes upon heating.
- The top most chamber is where freshly brewed coffee is collected ones hot water passes through the ground coffee. At the bottom of this chamber, there a fine filter that separates coffee particles from water.
What will you need to brew coffee with Moka Pot.
1. Fine Ground Coffee
2. A grinder if you order whole bean coffee
3. Stove Top Moka Pot
4. Filter Paper (This part is optional. We have tested and recommend using a paper filter for a cleaner cup of coffee. The filter paper also helps build higher pressure in the chamber by creating excess obstruction for the water flow).
5. A Kettle
6. A scale
What are the steps in brewing coffee with Moka Pot.
STEP 1 - Grind Your Coffee.
- Moka Pot requires finely ground coffee.
- The coffee should be ground keeping in mind the pore size of the Moka Pot filter. If the coffee particles are too coarse, the right amount of extraction may not take place.
- If they are too fine and are smaller than the pore size of the Moka Pot filter, you may experience particles coming up in your cup.
This is the reason we have been using Aeropress filters in our brewing. in addition to helping build higher pressure for better extraction, the filter paper also helps filter out very fine particles from the extracted brew.
STEP 2 - Add water to the bottom chamber.
We recommend keeping a water to coffee ratio of 15:1 to 18:1. Thus, for 20 grams of coffee, we recommend using 360 ml of water.
STEP 3 - Place ground coffee in the middle chamber.
- Once placed, give a gentle tap to evenly spread the coffee.
- Place the paper filter over the ground coffee. ideally paper filter should evenly cover the overall circular area of the middle chamber.
STEP 4 - Place the middle chamber on top of the bottom chamber and then place and turn the top chamber to seal the coffee.
STEP 5 - Place the Moka Pot on the stovetop flame.
- Keep the flame on low mode.
- Slow flame ensure that water is heated up evenly and avoids gushing the water through the middle chamber prematurely and with high flow.
- The flow of water should also be even for better extraction of coffee.
STEP 6 - Wait
- Wait for the water to pass through the coffee and collect in the top chamber.
- When water starts to spread in a wider area while coming out of the top nozzle, put down the flame or remove the Moka Pot from stove top.
STEP 7 - Pour
- Pour the freshly extracted coffee in a cup.
- Add some milk and sugar as per your taste.
We will be adding some more points here for a greater delight with Moka Pot Coffee.
